CHARITY NEWS
Club members enjoyed a retail experience without the need for a credit card at our annual "nearly new" sale which this year was held in May, at the home of Senior Vice President Penelope Richardson. Pre-owned clothes and shoes were sold in aid of our overseas charity fund and even members who were not able to bag a bargain very much enjoyed the lunch and the chat that went with it.
At the beginning of June a concert was arranged highlighting "The Sounds of Summer" and featuring girls from Nottingham Girls High School, plus one boy from the Boys High School. We were all so impressed with the talents of these young people who had put time and effort into delivering a most professional show and showed that not all youngsters nowadays are either hooligans or troublemakers as the media might have us believe. The money raised went towards the local Breast Care Appeal which the Club has been supporting this year.
Later on in June members and partners were invited to Sunday Lunch at President Elect Penelope's home with the aim of boosting our own Club funds. This most enjoyable event demonstrated yet again that Inner Wheel is all about fun and friendship.
July saw President Elaine hand over to new President Penelope at our meeting at the Red House and our own member Mary Pay be inducted as District 22 Chairman at District Induction Day held at Mansfield Civic Centre. Club members were out in force to support Mary on her big day and we are so proud that one of our own members has achieved this office. A member of the Newark Club, Freda Randall, was the first Chairman of District 22 so Mary is following in very good footsteps.
Towards the end of July our new President again opened her doors to members and partners for a Sunday Brunch which was greatly enjoyed by all those able to attend.
Donations for the year 2008-9 have now been distributed and were made to the following charities:
"Newark Breast Care Appeal.
"Diabetic Association (Children's Holidays).
"Water Aid.
"Limbless Association.
"Rosie May Charitable Trust (Sri Lanka Home).
"Association and District 22 Charitable appeals.
Forthcoming events include a Summer Luncheon (In conjunction with the Rotary Club), a Christmas Coffee Morning, a Musical evening and a St George's Dinner. Full details of all these events can be obtained from the Club Secretary.
